Exactly! This is why Corey Lee Wrenn of Vegan Feminist Network and I speak up about sexist jokes, language, and the objectification of women. They *are* a big deal on their own but also because they are foundational to all other forms of abuse of women.
Here is a link to a recent podcast we did about sexist language:
This poster shows a dark grey triangle with pink border. In the triangle are levels (bottom to top) that read:
SEXIST JOKES. LANGUAGE. OBJECTIFICATION OF WOMEN
TRADITIONAL ROLES. GLASS CEILING. RIGID STEREOTYPES FOR WOMEN & MEN
THREATS. VERBAL ABUSE. HARASSMENT
RAPE & SEXUAL ASSAULT. PHYSICAL. EMOTION & FINANCIAL ABUSE
At the top of the image, it reads, “To end men’s violence against women we need to challenge the foundations of violence.” At the bottom of the image, it reads, “Make the link Gender equality prevents men’s violence against women” and “Source: Mentors in Violence Prevention”.
